Nittany Lion Cross UCI 2day Opener!

Part 1 of the MACX Series and the opening weekend of the UCI Calender for many, races #1 and #2 delivered some serious heat both in competition and weather with temps well into the 90's on Saturday!! Handups were allowed both days in the pits as a result of the boosted temps, and riders were dropping out in all categories from running their engines into the red to the point of no return.

As a rider, the opening weekend is a chance to blow out the cob webs and ready the legs for racing to come. Riders from all over the country flocked to the small town of Trexlertown, PA (most known for track cycling) to the renowned Prefferred Cycling Center, host to Nittiany Lion CX. Those used to the cooler temps and drier air of CO, like Jake Wells (p/b Stans NoTubes) definitely took a toll from the heat but suffered through and tested their legs nonetheless. While many riders in the pro field prepped for Wednesday's Cross Vegas and got a chance to see what form they were bringing into the PRO CX calender event.

From the pits....

Working for MOB Pro CX team rider Alex Ryan, the weekend was uneventful due to the dry and fast conditions and thankfully no mechanicals. Despite staying with the lead group in the opening lap, Ryan went into the red and couldn't recover enough to make the intense efforts being maintained at the front by JAM Fund rider Stephen Hyde, who went on to be the winningest rider of the weekend. Used to the heat, but suffering from the temps, Alex kicked it down a few gears and rode his own race in an effort to curb the heat and save energy for round two on Sunday. Landing 21st/50 on Day #2 the choice to conserve and recover on day #1,upon falling victim to the heat, was obviously a good one.
